 Business Engagement at Queen's invite you to the lecture delivered by James Carroll, Deputy Chief Technology officer, Health Service Executive Ireland (HSE) titled 'The Day the Health Service Stopped: Reflections and Future Strategies'   

 In 2021, the Irish Health Service Executive faced a nationwide cyber-attack, which has led to ongoing threats against the Health Service. James will provide an in-depth analysis of the complexities of a cyber incident, presenting a range of approaches and strategies that leaders can implement to mitigate their impact.  

Resilience during and after a cyber incident is crucial for the continued operation of any organisation, as attackers exploit vulnerabilities. By examining the motivations and methods of attackers, James will guide you through the experience of dealing with nation-sponsored actors, insider sabotage, and the challenges encountered by businesses and law enforcement in tracking and apprehending perpetrators. 
 
By the end of this session, you will gain a deeper understanding of the true nature of your role and its critical importance in safeguarding your organisation. 

 Speaker Biography 

 James Carroll brings over 40 years of ICT expertise, with a deep understanding and practical application of leadership, resilience, transformation, and change management across the health sector and various large multinational organizations in multiple jurisdictions.  

As the Deputy CTO for the HSE, James oversees the effective and safe operation of the eHealth and ICT business. His role is pivotal in driving the Digital for Care 2030 strategy, which aims to leverage digital technology to enhance health services and make them more accessible to patients.  

James played a crucial role in the HSE's response to the cyber incident in 2021 and has been involved in managing numerous subsequent incidents within Ireland's health service. His insights into incident response and the anatomy of cyber threats are both refreshing and invaluable.
